Mouth Times: Big D’s Crock Pot Tofurky with Silky Chickpea Gravy

Big D’s Crock Pot Tofurky
- One Tofurky loaf (frozen is fine)
- One can cranberry sauce
- One packet dry onion soup mix
- A cup or two of vegetable broth for moisture
Add wet and dry ingredients to crock pock. Mix. Plop Tofurky loaf in center. Cook on high for approx three hours (if frozen). Remove loaf, slice thin (If you’ve never had Tofurky it is DENSE so a thin slice will suffice.) and serve with a drizzle of the cooking fluid.

It doesn’t look like much but a processed loaf of…shut your mouth! Trust. It will be mouthwatering in about four hours.

Cooked Tofurky doesn’t look much different from frozen Tofurky, but it will smell scrumptious. Go ahead and slap that dense, warm ball. You know you want to. SPANK IT!

Look at that grainy goodness riddled center! Moist and delicious! Why did I take so many loaf photos? You know what would make this meal perfect? GRAVY!
Silky Chickpea Gravy
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
- 1 small onion, chopped roughly
- 3 cloves garlic, chopped
- 2 teaspoons dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon dried rubbed sage (not powdered)
- Several pinches of freshly ground black pepper
- 2 tablespoons arrowroot powder
- 1 1/4 cups vegetable broth
- 1 (15-ounce) can chickpeas, drained and rinsed
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari
- Salt
Preheat a saucepan over medium-high heat. Saute the onion and garlic in the oil for about 5 minutes. Add the thyme, sage, and pepper, and cook for about 3 minutes more. While that is cooking, whisk the arrowroot into the veggie broth until dissolved.
If you have an immersion blender then add the beans, broth mixture and soy sauce to the pot. Blend until smooth and lower the heat to medium, stirring often for about 10 minutes while it thickens.
If you are using a regular blender, place the broth mixture and beans in the blender and blend until smooth. Add the onions and other stuff from the pan to the blender and puree again until smooth. Add back to the pot and stir often over medium heat to thicken.
Once the gravy thickens, lower the heat to low. Now you can decide exactly how thick you want the gravy by adding splashes of water, anywhere between 1/4 and 1/2 cup. Keep warm and covered until ready to serve.

Immersion blending makes me feel like a fancy pants chef. Look at those widdle chickpeas gettin’ all silky!

Dinner is served! How g-d Norman Rockwell does this plate look? Where’s Pa with the carving knife? The gravy delivery vehicle is caulipots (see recipe in previous “Mouth Times” post).
NOTES:
- Apparently there is currently an Arrowroot shortage, (Yes, that is a real thing) so I subbed cornstarch.
- I couldn’t find a vegan, dry onion soup mix but I did find a dry onion dip mix which seemed to work just as well.
How-Tuesday: Valentine’s Day Diorama-rama Tutorial
http://www.etsy.com/blog/en/2012/valentines-day-candy-box-diorama-rama/

This is a project I did for the very informative and clever Etsy blog. If you don’t read it on the regs, you should. You can see the full project by clinking the link at the top of the page. It was a true pleasure working on this project and a real thrill to be able to share my craft project with so many other talented folks!
Nail Art: Featuring Elizabeth Barrett Browning

You’ll Need:
- Nail trimmers
- A base coat (essie protein base coat)
- Nail color – your choice ( (essie angel food)
- Top coat (essie good to go!)
- Nail pen in your choice of color (Sally Hansen nail art pen in black)
- Tiny scissors or X-acto knife
- Subject matter to decoupage – I chose Elizabeth Barret Browning sonnets from an old, falling apart book
- Decoupage medium (Liquitex matte gel – Mod Podge works too!)
- Small brush

- Start with clean, trimmed nails. Apply base coat and two coats of the color of your choice. Allow nails to dry completely.
- Apply the strips of paper – use tiny scissors to cut out a thin line of a few words. Trim to fit on nail. Using small brush, apply decoupage medium to back of cut paper strip. Place strip on nail and decoupage over the front. Be as neat as possible. Repeat on all desired digits. Allow decoupage strip to dry completely on nail.
- Using a nail pen in your choice of color fill in the space above the paper strip. Apply two coats of color. Allow nails to dry completely then apply a top coat over the entire nail.

To make your manicure last longer try not to do too much wetting of the nails and air dry or wipe gently with a soft cloth.
This is NOT a long lasting manicure – plan it for a special occasion! The opera? A special night out wherein you get crunk? An event where you will be heavily photographed? I don’t know your life. I do know my mani only lasted three days with touch-ups – do not expect this to last long through daily life.
Mouth Times: Caulipots and Veggie Pot Pie Stew

Cauliflower Mashed Potatoes or Caulipots
- 2 russet potatoes, cut into 3/4″ inch pieces (about 1 1/2 lbs)
- 1/2 head cauliflower
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 to 4 tablespoons vegetable broth
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Several pinches of freshly ground black pepper
Place the potatoes in a 4-quart pot in enough cold water to submerge them, making sure there are about 4 inches of extra water on top for when you add the cauliflower. Bring the potatoes to a boil. Once boiling, add the cauliflower and lower the heat to a simmer. Let simmer for about 15 minutes, until the potatoes and cauliflower are tender.
Drain them in a colander, return to the pot, and use a potato masher to mash them a bit. Add the olive oil, 2 tablespoons of broth, and the salt and pepper , and mash a bit more. Use a fork to make sure all the seasonings are mixed well. If needed, add another 2 tablespoons of broth. Taste for salt. Serve warm.

White and brown foods just do not photograph to their most appetizing potential. Cauliflower looks like brains, russet potatoes look like turds, or rocks, or rocky turds. However, this combo turns out deliciously in… Cauliflower Mashed Pototoes or Caulipots. (Henceforth this recipe shall be refered to as “caulipots” as it is cuter!)

My great grandma’s old metal potato masher still does the job toot-sweet! Plus, who doesn’t want a little Great Grandma magic in their starches?

Look at how scrumptious those Caulipot cuties look! Let’s make them an edible bowl device for…
Veggie Pot Pie Stew
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
- 1 small onion, cut into medium dice
- 1/2 pound cremini mushrooms, sliced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 1/2 teaspoons dried sage
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Several pinches of freshly ground black pepper
- 1/2 cup yellow split peas
- 3 cups vegetable broth
- 1 1/2 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and cut into 3/4-inch chunks
- 1/2 pound carrots, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch chunks
- 2 heaping tablespoons fresh thyme
- 1 cup water
- 1/4 cup all purpose flour
- 3/4 cup frozen peas
Preheat a 4-quart pot over medium-high heat. Saute the onions in the oil until translucent, about 4 minutes. Add the mushrooms, garlic, sage, salt and black pepper and saute for 3 more minutes, until the mushrooms have released their moisture.
Add the split peas and vegetable broth, cover the pot, and bring to a boil. Let boil for about 5 minutes, then add the potatoes and carrots. Lower the heat to a simmer and cook for 25 to 30 more minutes, or until the split peas are tender and the potatoes and carrots are cooked. Stir the stew occasionally to make sure it doesn’t burn or stick to the bottom.
In a measuring cup, mix the flour into the water to dissolve into a slurry. Add the thyme, slurry and frozen peas to the pan. Cook, uncovered, for about 10 more minutes, stirring often. The stew should thicken and become more and more delicious.
Taste for salt and seasoning. Serve garnished with more fresh thyme.
Recipe taken from Appetite for Reduction by Isa Chandra Moskowitz (pages 251-252)
My Shameful Cheats: Substituted baby bella for cremini mushrooms. Used dried thyme in place of fresh. Harvested a split pea cup-of-soup for the split peas and ditched the flavor powder. Added several cloves extra garlic and added extra peas.

What smells better than onions and garlic cooking? I always add extra garlic as I am highly attractive to vampires. And I love it when my hands smell like garlic.

Baby bellas make a good substitute if you are unable to procure cremini mushrooms.

Root veggie dream – potatoes and carrots! This could easily be the basis for every meal I ever loved.

Time to make the slurry! Slurry in a hurry!

Dinner is served! This is a high class version of “failure pile in a sadness bowl”.

Craft & Fancy 4: Poster

Poster for the 4th annual Craft and Fancy handmade gift sale. I drew the girl by hand, then collaged pieces of vintage black and white wrapping paper to make the big bow and gifts. Next, I scanned my artwork and converted it to an Adobe Illustrator file so I could add text. The large text is a font called “Paisley Caps” from the indispensable book Retrofonts. Printed on brown kraft paper cardstock.
